The artist discussed this picture in her autobiography: "July 30. I started an improbable subject-at least a very hard one to make effective-the tip of a lady's head with a Gay Ninety hat perched on it, and a marvelous old bell, a tintinabulum, hanging on what was supposed to be a shop door, as the bell was intended to ring to tell the shop's proprietor that a customer had come in."
