Godey Print

The artist discussed this picture in her autobiography: "August 15, I started another little painting, 'Godey Print.' I really liked this subject: I had, and still have, a wonderful old satin bonnet trimmed with feathers and I'd been fortunate as to find an almost exactly similar bonnet in a Godeyprint, so I set up my painting to look as though some one had either just trimmed, or was trimming, the bonnet with the print in front of her to guide her.

"This was, for me, an unusually attractive painting, and Mr. Barrie [her dealer at Grand central Art Galleries], on at least two occasions sent me photographs of it to show me the sort of thing it would be advisable for me to be doing when I'd been indulging in too long a run of sordid, depressing and unsaleable, subjects."
