Still-life painting has
a rich tradition dating back to 17th century Holland and Spain.
In the 1850s and 60s this tradition enjoyed a resurgence
along the eastern seaboard of the United States. William H. Hoyt
of New York, alongside contemporaries Severin Roesen, George Forster
and Charles Baum, all of Pennsylvania, painted Americas fruits
and flowers. In Still Life of Baskets and Fruit, the simplicity
and clarity of Hoyts painting technique contrasts with the
bountiful harvest of grapes, peaches, strawberries, raspberries,
pears and cherries arranged on a richly veined marble table-top.
